    Of Boogers and Babes...

So, I dropped John and Dory off at the house while Jack and I headed out to the store for some necessities. I got just out of the development when my phone rang - it was John. My thought? "Geez, what happened?"

John started with telling me that Dory had chosen to pick her nose and eat it while sitting on his lap. He took a brief moment to remind me of his absolute and total revulsion to all things mucus coming from large holes in the face. I felt like I knew just where this was going... especially since Dory was crying in the background about how she wanted her Mommy. I explained to him that this was normal, she does it often, and that it was a phase and to let it go, she would stop - so on and so forth. He suggested I allow him to finish his story.

John calmly told me that he informed her that it that it was nasty, gross, bad, yucky, would make her sick... you get the picture...
She wrinkled up her face and proclaimed, "Yeah, and it's not organic either!"

What can I say? I'm doing my job!!!! She's learning!
(I told John he could tell her that it's okay, it is organic.... he refused.)

    What Book are You?

    You're Adventures of Huckleberry Finn!

    by Mark Twain

With an affinity for floating down the river, you see things in black
and white. The world is strange and new to you and the more you learn about it, the less
it makes sense. You probably speak with an accent and others have a hard time
understanding you and an even harder time taking you seriously. Nevertheless, your
adventurous spirit is admirable. You really like straw hats.

    Take the Book Quiz
    at the Blue Pyramid.

I took it several times, changing answers depending on how I waffled on a question and was alternately, I, Robot - Anne of Green Gables - Watership Down - Cat's Cradle LOL Um, okay.... I KNOW I don't see things in Black and White....

    Once back in college...

I was bitten by a mouse. It was my roommate's live feed for her pet snake. (BTW- that thing STANK!) It was a bit painful as he bit the tip of my finger and his teeth were ^%#&@%* SHARP!!! But, he had it coming since he was lunch.

    _______skip ahead many years______

I have not thought about that since until the last week or so. Now I think about it multiple times a day. Jack now has 6 perfectly razor sharp little teeth and when you least expect it, when you are holding him and he snuggles close.... ZAP! pain courses just like it did nearly a decade ago. Yes, he has even broken skin and drawn blood. It. Really. Hurts.

    I yelp.
I try not to hurt him as I reactively pull away.
    I set him down.
    I walk away.

    He looks bewildered.
He scrunched up his face pitifully.
    He wails.

I swear he thinks he is giving me love nips... like when a new mom or dad just wants to 'eat the baby up' and can't refrain from nibbling on the baby. I swear that seems to be what he is doing. But, IT HURTS!!!!

Dory never did do this. She would nip while nursing when tired, but Jack has taken biting to a whole new, painful, level.

He bites my shoulder, my clothes, my arm, my nipple... you name it, he will bite it. I am soooo ready for it to stop.

    I don't get it...

How do you go through a day where nothing goes right yet everything is wonderful?

Today we were going to go to the park with some new friends... but they needed to cancel.
So we took Daddy to work and decided to go to the Discovery Place to play.
As I got downtown, it dawned on me that I should call Patty to see if she was free for lunch. She was.
We pull into the parking lot and I look down to find I had pulled a great mistake of Mommyhood. I wore poopy pants. Yep, Jack had a leak the other day and it mushed all over my jeans. I took them off and set them aside. Apparently not aside enough because I decided to wear them again. So, I am out in public with poop stains. *sigh* Oh well, I figure no one will really notice, and those who do will understand completely. They will, won't they?
Anyway, I get out and unbuckle Dory and tell her to put on her shoes as I go around to get Jack out of his seat. Dory is dawdling and not listening so I come back around to help her along only to find... no shoes. I had told Daddy she could walk out barefoot since her brown flip flops with the sequins were in the car, as they often are. But, alas, I was soooo very wrong. No shoes in that car anywhere. Not even one searching for a mate. None.
We load back into the car and I am thinking madly as we leave the parking deck. How long and wasteful would it be to go home and get her shoes vs going and buying a new pair for the fall real quick? I choose new shoes.
Off to the Park Road Shopping Center we go. Rack Room.
Would you believe of all the shoes there that they only had ONE pair of shoes that were 1. her size, 2. not covered in some liscensed character 3. was not a croc rip off and 4. was under $30?!?!? It's outrageous! Well, that aside, we found a super cute pair of brown leather loafers in the boy's section that look like they are straight out of Dick and Jane. They need girly socks, but they are kick ass cute.
New shoes on the feet, we walk up the sidewalk to my old haunt to say hello at the bookstore. Hello to Sally, hello to Sherri, Hello to Martha, Frank and Frazer. We enjoy ourselves looking around and reading books.... until... I realize I am now running late for lunch with Grandma downtown.
Lickity split we are in the car and driving... I call Patty expecting her to be in a bind with us being late but it seems that it made absolutely no difference. We head back to our deck, park and head UPHILL for 2 blocks to meet her at her office.
Out we go for Thai. Lunch was really nice. Dory really behaved pretty well, other than she wanted to be excused when she was finished to go play some... seems we should work on the 'no, you need to wait until everyone else is finished' while at home more. Jack got hungry and is at the age where I get more leery to just NIP, but it went without incident. (Not that I have ever had one... I know my legal rights and am fully prepared, but still...)
On the way out we pass and look at several pieces of artwork, almost making our trip a gallery day. Dory enjoyed it and I loved it, Grandma told us cute stories about her youth in Washington DC and the galleries there.
After lunch we headed for coffee. They had nothing organic for Dory, so no 'Dory coffee'. Would you believe there was no tantrum?!?! I was shocked. VERY surprised.
After we said our goodbyes to Grandma we hopped onto the Orange line Gold Rush 'Trolley' for the ride two blocks north. We didn't even have to wait, it pulled up as we reached the stop! I had found a walking map for the art displays downtown as we had left lunch, and it had the trolley lines vaguely listed so it was fairly apparent which one we needed. We decided to stay on longer and come back around so Dory could really enjoy herself.
However, halfway around was apparently the shift change and we sat, waiting on the new driver to show up... that is until the current driver told us in her broken english that we could get on the trolley in front of us, that they were leaving and we were welcome to switch. So we did.
We got off right in front of Discovery Place, went in and meandered around their main floor before going downstairs to see the fish. Dory looked and played with every display she could find. Some she figured out, others she left in the dust to figure out another day. Slowly we made it downstairs to the toddler room. Which was busy, but not so crowded that it could not be enjoyed. Now that Jack is a bit bigger he got to get hands on too and loved the baby corral. A quick trip to the bathroom and we spent another hour running around looking at things.
At 4pm we headed out towards the car so I could make it to the Tailgate Farmer's Market right as they open. I had a short shopping list but wanted to make sure no one sold out before I got there. Well, I made it in time.... but my farmers, well... one didn't even show. Another only had eggs and tomatoes... when I wanted 12 cloves of garlic (yes, I know that's a lot... I really did want 12). The only thing I was able to get was my baggy of oregano from 'Rosemary' Pete. *sigh*
I waited around another 30 minutes hoping that Grateful Growers would show up late because I didn't want to get to John's office to early since he can not leave earlier than 6. They didn't.
    Well, as I drove by his office at 5 I called him to see when we could fetch him. I had two kids fast asleep in their seats and John said to come on and get him... r e a l s l o w l y d o n o t h u r r y.
Little did he know we were just outside - so I drove home, got the mail, looked trough the stack of junk and drove back.
We got there at 5:40. The kids woke up as he climbed in. We headed home.

So, my question is... how does nearly everything go wrong in a day and it still be a good day? Well, it seems that as everything went wrong that something went right. That does not seem to happen very often. At the end of the day all things were equal.
    Except for the poopy pants.

    I just don't get it.

HOW can I stay so busy? I still have laundry and dishes to do, just got the kids to bed the latest ever... it was almost 11, have to finish getting ready for a wedding shower on Saturday, the kombucha has been brewing for nearly 2 weeks... one week too long, I was lucky Becky brought Abby some food... poor dog was starving, the living room is a wreck and the cleaning lady was JUST here, I have company coming in the morning.... seriously, I just don't get it. Maybe I should stop blogging and do the dishes.

Oh, well, for the first time I can ever remember, Jack and Dory are both asleep upstairs in the same room. Dory in her bed and Jack in the crib!

    I'm exhausted.

    And John's even more tired.

    http://glutenfreegirl.blogspot.com/2005/08/what-heck-is-gluten-anyway.html

I have found a new blog to read and have truly enjoyed perusing it. I post this link since some will have no clue what gluten is or why it could be harmful to Jack, (or possibly me - I'm not ruling it out but I don't have severe reactions, that I know of).
Anyway, her blog is really well written and I have been enjoying it immensely. She has some WONDERFUL looking recipes as well.

    First Step, Yep, Just One

One lonely step was taken from couch to chair yesterday at Auntie's house when we went to pick up Dory. It wasn't a stumble fall from one to the other, it was a let go-step-grab. One full step. No more since then, but a few seconds standing on his own have been accomplished. He'll be running soon!

Dory went to Auntie's House Again

For the WHOLE weekend this time. She was excited when I told her today... and they went shopping when they got back to her place. I spoke to her tonight before bed and she was busy playing in her makeshift tent with playdoh... she certainly did not seem like she would be heading to bed anytime soon.

Since she headed out I took John to dinner, out for Thai food tonight. Jack did pretty well through dinner. It is amazing how much easier it was with just one kid to concentrate on.
Tomorrow John and I have a home schooling conference to attend. I really hope it at the least gives us a great overview of all we need to know heading into this. Off I go to pack... it lasts from 8 until 5:30... long, informative day ahead.

    Stumbling Along

Yesterday as Grandpa John and I were watching Jack loosely walked/cruised along the couch. Almost as if he were walking with one finger cruising along. Tonight, he did the same thing again, almost, with Daddy around. Now, Dory fooled us by waiting MONTHS when she had the ability... but Jack might be awfully close to his first real steps. :) 4 months earlier than his sister. He NEEDS to be able to chase her after all....

    102

That is what the car's thermometer read today. No lie. Seriously. It is hot as hell outside. My feet were scorched this afternoon as I stood outside talking to Freddie for a few minutes. How Dory ran around on the concrete and didn't have a problem I will never know.

I didn't even get any strange looks at the farmer's market this afternoon when I left both kids in the running. Glad no one decided to take the car for a joyride and kidnap the kids. Honestly, I think it was just too hot to be kidnapping.

    Hot AND humid.

Saving the World One EyeRoll at a Time

My sweet husband puts up with a lot from me and my save the world ventures. CFLs, getting rid of Teflon nonstick pans (KUDOS to him for that one!!! He gave up 3!), and... the big one... Recycling. Everything.
I am so proud that many weeks our recycle bin has more stuff than our trash can does. There have even been a few times when I put out the recycling, but NOT the trash! This has, however, not always been a peaceful process in our house. In order to recycle I sometimes go to extremes and sacrificing precious time. Or, at times space. Like on out return trip from the family reunion... I brought back 80% of our recyclables with us. Packed in with all the other luggage. We hauled back trash. I could feel the distain melting off of John, but he - to his HUGE credit - never once mentioned it. Maybe he didn't want to argue with me, but maybe he was coming around... I don't know. But I do know that I have bought into the whole save the Earth 'thing' Hook, Line and Sinker. I practice it in every way that I can without causing a massive revolt and WWIII here at home. So far Armageddon has been avoided.
Tonight, after perusing the local food blog and the Tailgate Market's site, I found a link... maybe it was from Kleen Kanteen, I don't remember now... to this one:

An Albatross carcass, filled with... plastic

In many ways it reminds me of John's caption contests where you take the wierd picture and come up with something super witty... in other ways it is just plain scary. Seriously, scary. It makes me glad that I shipped home our recyclables, all the plastic bottles we drank from while away from home. I feel really good about myself that I at the very least TRY, even when I fail, to be a part of the solution rather than the problem.
So, go ahead and make some fun captions with this guy... but after you do, take that water bottle you just used to the recycle bin rather than the landfill.
    Please.

BTW: This Albatross was an area "which lies in a remote and virtually uninhabited region of the North Pacific. The animal is a juvenile who was fed the objects by its parents who foraged them from thousands of miles of the north Pacific Ocean.."
Source: Captain Charles Moore, Algalita Marine Research Foundation
    Makes it even more scary.

    Bedtime stories...

Once upon a time there was a pink castle. In this pink castle in the land far away lives a Princess who had long curly blonde hair that she wore in two braids. She always dressed in a big beautiful sparkly blue dress. Her name was Grace. Princess Grace.
Princess Grace had a pet. His name was Fred and he was a frog. Fred the frog spent all his time sitting on her shoulder. He did everything with Princess Grace and came to be known as Sir Fred the Frog.
    Anyway...
One day Princess Grace was sad. Her mommy the Queen was sick. So, Princess Grace and Sir Fred the Frog set out to help her.
They went out the front gate of the pink castle that they called home and walked down the lane, stopping to smell the tulips that grew alongside the road. They went across the bridge that was over the babbling brook and just over the hill to the friendly forest.
In the center of the friendly forest was their destination... the Fairy Ring. The circular clearing hidden in the center with a small stubby stump in the center. This is where the fairies and their magic lived. Now fairies are beautiful, and very small. They are only about as big as your nose. Baby fairies are as big as a baby's nose. Children fairies are about as big as a child's nose. Lady fairies are about as big as your Mom's nose and men fairies are about as big as your Dad's. The fairies all have wings, and they all fly, even the babies. Their wings are transparent and they shimmer in the light with flecks of yellow, green and purple. My favorite are the green sparkles... When they fly and you look up, it's like the stars are alight during the day. And you know what fairies wear? Flowers. They fashion all sorts of beautiful clothes out of flowers....
The King of the Fairies is named Erik. King Erik of the Fairies.
He's as big as Daddy's nose.
Princess Grace and Sir Fred the Frog had come to see King Erik of the Fairies.
She had heard that he could help her Mom, the Queen. King Erik of the Fairies granted Princess Grace wings. To Sir Fred the Frog he gave the ability to burp bubbles.
Princess Grace thanked the Fairy King and left the Fairy Ring, the Friendly Forest and walked back over the hill and up the lane. She and Sir Fred, the Frog, walked over the bridge at the babbling brooke and stopped to smell the tulips and he daisies taking some back for the Queen.
The Queen was very happy to see her daughter the Princess, but was too weak to talk. Princess Grace walked over to her and gave her Mother a kiss on the cheek. Then... she turned around.
Sir Fred the Frog began to burp bubbles... Lots of them...
Princess Grace began to fan her wings, and all of the bubbles landed softly on top of the Queen's head with a plop, plop, plop... except for the last one, which landed softly on her nose.
The bubbles were not ordinary, like the ones we blow with wands and pop in midair or when they touch something... these are special. After the last bubble landed on the tip of the Queen's nose, they all began to shimmer with the iridescent colors of fairy wings. Then, they melted into fairy dust covering the Queen's head and giving her strength.
The gifts of King Eric of the Fairies to Princess Grace and Sir Fred the Frog had saved the Queen.
    The End.
    Good night.
    _______________________
I am certainly getting better... I was doing quite well a few weeks ago talking about Princess Dory who went past the woods, past the fox, over the hill to the top of the mountain to see the Puckett Dragons who took her to a far away mountain to see the rest of the Puckett Dragons. And then flew home. LOL.... Dory then was not sure she wanted to go to the family reunion, since we are the 'Pucketts' and she was not sure she wanted to meet the dragons. And se was NOT a Puckett, because she was NOT a dragon. Not even a friendly one. LOL She got over it once we got to the mountains....

    No longer my little vampire.

I noticed this morning that Jack was trying real hard to pop one of his front teeth, the one on the left. *sigh* So, the vampire baby didn't last too long.

His newest fun thing is clicking his tongue against the roof of his mouth and thwacking anything and everything with his arm. And climbing the stairs....

I'm gonna have to hire child care at this rate. I've heard Grandpas are cheap....
