So this time it's Mommy's turn to learn...

4 days ago I wrote about how John learned a lesson about Dory and diapers.... Well, I haven't had time to write it up until now, but the next night was, unfortunately, my turn. That little bugger.

I know when a diaper has velcro that you have to have some sort of cover on it, like pants or pajamas. So, I put her in pajamas. Normal huh? Well, the next morning, I woke up and Dory greeted me at the door and said, "poopy diaper, Mommy" and disappeared for a few seconds. When she returned she was carrying a used diaper and pointing to the inside of it saying "poopy" and pointing. I told her not to put her finger in it while I desperately tried to figure out how we would have left a dirty diaper in her room for her to find. Clearly it wasn't the one she went to bed in.

    Not so fast.
When I went over to her and took the diaper from her, I glanced around her room trying to figure the mystery out. Her clothes were still on, and all of the snaps fastened. She has not been able to fasten snaps just yet, so clearly I was in the clear. So, I threw the diaper away.

    Didn't slow down did you?
When I picked her up, it felt a little weird; diapers always add a bit of padding, and she didn't have any. The little bugger had managed to unfasten it and pull it out one of the leg holes without getting any on herself. Amazing.

    ...the wrong diaper

Okay, so when Dory was born I knew that I wanted to cloth diaper her. It was better for the environment and better for her skin. While it is cheaper in the long run it costs more upfront. And that's why we never seemed to get started with it. It really seems that you have to go all in, otherwise it is too hard to use two systems.
So, for these 2 years, we have bought a few CDs and have never managed to make the jump. Oh, well.... There have been other things I have been great at when it comes to being a parent.
In the meantime, we have used Pampers... They have worked wonderfully for us, often allowing me to be complacent about changing her because it holds so much. (Bad Mommy...) But before she was a year old, we had to move from the Cruisers to the First Steps since she learned to undo the tabs and take off her diaper. Good move overall. Requires complete stripping to replace a diaper, but it wasn't all that bad.
Recently a few things have happened that has made all of this even more fun. The local Target has discontinued the First Steps and I have been trying to use a flushable diaper called littleG... gDiapers.com They are really good and well, don't take up space in the landfills and are sewer and septic safe. They are very cool. You snap an insert into what is basically a cloth diaper shell. Easy and great huh? Best of all they velcro BACKWARDS.... making it more difficult for her to dismantle... but not completely impossible.
On with the story... Really, I am going somewhere with this! So, Target stopped my faves and forced me to buy a bag of Cruisers because all of the littleG shells were dirty from me not catching a full insert in time and the leakage that always ensues. Add to that the fact that I do not as of yet have many shells, only 2 that fit well. Remember my mentioning that I had become complacent? So we go home with our Cruisers and use them for a few days. Then I find the First Steps at the grocery, and as much as I loathe buying dipes at the grocery, I guess that I just will since Target no longer wants my business. So now I have one bag upstairs and one bag down. Apparently in the wrong places.
I went out last night with the Moms in my University group from CharlotteMommies.com and had a great time. John played with her, fed her and put her to bed. Nothing abnormal really. She usually goes down naked (except for a diaper) unless it is cold in the house, and it wasn't. He is really great at putting her down when I am gone and it usually goes without hitch. Last night was indeed fine.
    But..........
This morning, as I was waking up, I heard a velcro ripping sound. Now, that is not enough to alarm me because 1.) She LOVES shoes and all of hers have velcro. It is completely normal for her to put on shoes and nothing else. She's a baby shoe fanatic. 2.) I always put her down in a diaper that she can't take off or at least put pants on with it so she can't get to it.
A few minutes later I heard my dear sweet happy morning person daughter talking to herself in her room.... "poopy... diaper.... poopy..." So I roll over to my groggy love and ask him, "What type of diaper did you put her down in last night?" He replied, "Not the pull up kind, why?"
    *panic hits hard*
Sure enough, she was sitting bare bunned on the carpeted floor with a piece of doody hanging off the rear, some was smeared on the door where she had backed up against the door to stand and the nicely full diaper was sitting beside her neatly laid out.
She happily looks up and says to me, "Poopy, Mommy! as she pointed at the diaper without, thankfully, placing her hand or finger into the mess.
I quickly wrap another Cruiser around her and head back to bed thinking, I'll get a few minutes... but very soon I hear the velcro again. So, into the shower she goes and I search her room for any signs of hidden stashes of fun. As it turns out, she just took off the second diaper as soon as she used it. Okay, at least she did that rather than decide her blocks bucket was a great toy potty, or worse.... The clorox wipes cleaned most of it very well.
John then asks, "Did I use the wrong diaper?"
"Well, yeah... you did, but I didn't ever tell you."
And the moral of the story is..... even though it doesn't really come up in normal conversation and you assume you loved one knows how things normally run, don't. Make a point of listing such scenarios.
Amazingly, it was very well contained but John will have to clean the carpet this weekend to remove a small spot... but be forewarned.... don't use the wrong diaper.

    Archives from: a little pregnant

a little pregnant: Jesus gay, I'm pregnant. Archives

Entry 5/31/2004 "The light of a thousand suns"

Seriously, a vast part of this post could have been written by me, this morning.

You have never seen a fainter positive in your life.

To see a second line, you'd have needed NASA-grade optics, the ability to convince yourself that the Earth is flat, and the light of a thousand suns. But there was a second line.

I stared at the line for about an hour. By 7 AM I could wait no longer, and made my poor beleaguered husband wake up, put on his reading glasses (or as we call them in these days of PIO, his stickin' glasses), and stumble into the bathroom for a consultation.

Me: Okay, first look at this one. [Brandishes negative test from last cycle. Paul peers owlishly at test.] Now check out this one. [Shoves new test practically up Paul's nose. Time passes. Paul stares, holds it up to the light, squints, does everything but take the fucking thing apart.] See, I think there's something there. I mean, you need to want to see it...but I think there's a second line there.

Paul: [Stares fixedly at test. Stares at the negative. Stares at the new one. Stares some more. And more. For about an hour.] Well... [Pauses for another hour and a half.] I think there's something there...

I spent the rest of the day in the bathroom, staring, boring a hole in the test with the force of my gaze. The thing practically started to smoke, so powerful was my concentration. (And, really, nothing says home like the smell of burning pee.)

Okay, so John was at work... but you get the idea!

    Okay, Okay...

So my Blog is a bit boring. I get it. I told you it would be about my life as a mother and you don't really see it.... well, it is about being a mother. My whole life now is about eing a mother and a wife and my life can be a bit, well, boring. I go day to day wiping noses and getting the best hugs and kisses in the world, but it doesn't always seem blog worthy. Today we went to church, had lunch with Grandma and Grandpa and came home to nurse Daddy back to health since Dory passed on her cold to him. However, we steared clear of Daddy for fear of catching the cold again and went to the store with our neighbor and friend, 'Me-gan' as Dory says it, where we bought a big dark pink bouncy ball for Dory. We came back home. I put her to bed after reading 2 books, nursing and saying lots of "AMEN"s. I ordered John a pizza because that was what he wanted for dinner. I have read over the Charlotte Mommies boards, talked to Becky and chatted with Mo. Big whoop.
Well... one of these days I'll figure out how to be one of the great storytellers that I love so much, like my friends Becky and Mo. They are both great for "Story Time".
Until then, you will just have to be happy for my boring, that is, cut-and-dry-what's-going-on-and-has-me-excited-and-happy posts. I hope you do keep reading!

    The Scrolls, Part 2

The speaker at Church this morning was WONDERFUL. She had tons of information, some I knew and some I didn't. I understood the signifigance of the scrolls but neglected to understand the impact science has played in reading them and the unbelievable twists in their history. It's a miracle that they are even with us after being found!

Anyway, I am also looking into going to the lecture series and volunteering if John will allow me to... he'd have to keep Dory while I was there.

Some people have balked at the 20$ price tag for admission, but they fail to think about and understand all that has gone into this... For starters, the ticket cost includes an audio tour. More importantly,it is because of the special cases that Discover Place had TO BUILD for the scrolls. Think high tech movie climate controlled/armored cases. EACH scroll is insured for a million dollars, even though they are priceless and had to be flown 1st class in it's own seat on it's own flight with two human escorts (one awake at ALL times)..... Lots of money went into this, so hence the high 20$ ticket price.

Once you are in, you are allowed to stay as long as you would like, and there are benches and at the begining a short intro video.

They are considered the greatest archeological find of our century and the exhibit covers their religious, scientific and historical signifigance. It will be well worth the $20 if you can find it to go.

Groups are 15 or more people and are 16$.

I am glad to know Payton is alive!

Sammy.... I am so glad your beautiful wife called me. Seeing as how you were never going to get around to telling me that the two of you had a little girl at Christmas! Some friend, I tell you!!! Going out west, never calling or emailing... never even giving me your contact info and not letting me know if you read the emails I did send!!! ;) Then moving back to civilization and not letting me know... I love you, you know that... BUT DON'T DO THAT TO ME AGAIN!

Anyway, the Baptism was beautiful and I can't believe how beautiful the family has become. I was glad that I could make the 9am Last Second Notice Baptism (Okay, it's not like I usually have plans, but do you really want to plan on that for something as important as this?), even if you were running right on "Sammy Standard Time". Let me tell you, by the time I left the house this morning, it was good that there were no cops around. I drove home a bit slower.

Well, when I got home, John was getting sick and Dory well. Quite a team they are, switching places like that. Oh well, such is life here at planet mommy. They did have a reportedly great morning without me, although Dory would not go down for a nap until I arrived home. John felt badly that he didn't get a chance to see his Godson.

It was great catching up with you and I hope the two of you have an awesome weekend up in Ashville. It's great you can get away like that. I do hope we can get the families together this summer for a vacation.

    Dead Sea Scrolls -- Charlotte.com

I am so excited! The Dead Sea Scrolls have been found in Charlotte starting today. I have every intention to see them in the near future, maybe next month. I hope it is everything that I am imagining it will be.

Charlotte.com has some great info on the exhibit now open at Discover Place, right next door to my church. On Sunday morning, a speaker will be at the Faith Formation class (think Episcopal Sunday School) to do a presentation. I really hope to enjoy it.

    Charlotte Mommies / Mommies Network

Is up and running again. The collective sigh has been released and we are all posting like mad. If you are a mommy and in the Charlotte area, I urge you to join our support group. If you are a mommy outside of Charlotte, then check the Mommies Network for a forum in your city/area. We are starting them all the time. (One opens in Hawaii soon!) If you are not a mom, well.... sorry, you are just out of luck.

They are also looking for a good man to administer the Daddies site. Maybe one day.

    Read more at www.charlottemommies.co...

Oh, yeah... and for one very brief shining day, I was among the top ten posters... I even hit #7 for a few hours. Now, the madness has ceased and I'll go back to my regular CM addiction.

What I did on my CM vacation.

In the spirit of summer vacation essays...

I have worked on this blog, trying different things with the template, actually changing the template outright. The old one was just a wee bit too pink for me. This one had dots all over the background, but they were bugging me. As I have edited, it looks like I have it optimized for Firefox right now; it appears a little funny in IE. Sorry. I'll figure out this stuff soon enough; you'll just have to bear with me. I've really figured out quite a bit already. If I could just learn to be content with someone else's designs my life would be so much easier. I have to tweak everything from sewing patterns to page formats. One day I'll learn.

I had a chat box up earlier but it was creating pop up ads, and I certainly don't want those to bother you. I am waiting on approval for a new one that is in beta stages that should not have that problem. It will hopefully be active in the next few days. The one that was up earlier, it was really slow too.

I've also been creating new posts and sewing...

Yes, that's right, sewing. A retro print baby doll dress, a knitting needle case and matching bag, hip baby slings for a friend's upcoming birth...
Haven't touched the house. And it is driving me nuts. I'm wanna be a clean freak. But I am not. Sad really. I need to do dishes, laundry, vacuum, pick up the tornado of disaster my angel has left in her tracks.

I will post pics of my wares before I lose them this time. But alas, adventures in mommyland has to begin again. Dory is sick and awake. If you have kids, you know what that means.

    myPod

I love my new iPod nano. My birthday present has finally arrived and I have spent the last few days of free time uploading all of my favorite CD's and finding the lyrics and album art to supplement it. I have been to the store to get scratch protection, a film that coves it and the colored Apple Tubes. Right now it is bright green, just like above. I have researched the best accessories and where to get them the cheapest. eBay is not the cheapest by far, BTW.

One of the coolest things? It syncs with my Outlook, all of my appointment info is loaded so I have an appointment book to travel too. I can upload directions and not have to worry about papers and maps that can get lost. I had no idea when I got it.
It's a little obsessive, I know. I'm just like that.

So far, I have uploaded Jack Johnson, Nickel Creek, Grant Lee Buffalo, Sam Phillips, The Rat Pack, Evanescence, several soundtracks...
Any suggestions for more great music?

    It all came crashing down.

    Charlotte Mommies that is.

The web forum came to a grinding halt for 2200 mommies in the Charlotte area yesterday. At first we thought it was a hacker. It turns out it was just a much more boring server crash. We lost all of our posts and our post counts but, glory be, we still have our galleries and userlists. Our admin has the kids at the grandparents for the weekend and is doing everything that they can to have us up and running again on Monday.

    God Bless Them.
    No, I mean it seriously.

You have no idea what an addict you really are until you have been cut off from what ever it is. I do believe that I am starting to twitch at this point. *twitch, twitch* I said something to John last night to that very effect, and he said, "Seriously, you didn't know!?!!?" Well, um, no. I didn't quite get the full effect until now. As I read the first email sent out yesterday, I nearly cried.

The worst part? I have friends on the site that I go to see at events and have no other contact info for them. I never have written down their phone numbers or emails. I didn't need to. I just sent them a private message. What was the need? Oh, yeah... in case the server crashes and we loose everything. Well, I have learned my lesson.

I am beyond ecstatic that one of our esteemed admin sent my email addy to Mo. (Mo's blog links 'headsmacks' and 'idiot mom's guide to parenthood' are below... and hilarious!) So I have still managed to spend the day on the computer talking to others rather than cleaning the house.

Relief did arrive this morning though. The email sent out today read:

    Good Morning Mommies!

    THE GOOD NEWS
    1. It does not look like we had a hacker, just a major crash. There was no abnormal activity on our account, so tech support said it was most likely a database malfunction. We feel confident that our security was NOT breeched.

    2. We have a good record of our membership, so all accounts will be restored with their original username and join date.

    3. Heather saved the February calendar and the Gallery photos

    THE BAD NEWS
    1. We lost all of our posts
    2. We lost all of our post counts

So basically all that is left of CharlotteMommies is us..which was what the site was anyways - a bunch of software and a lot of fantastic women. So all is not lost. We still have the most important thing - our mommies. :-)

It also went on to say not to email the admin for other's email addresses.... that was probably my fault. Oh well! I was among the firsts and got what I needed. I feel very little remorse!

So, we are okay. For the most part. We will of course have lots to reconstruct.... Some posts went on for 30+ pages. Like one for TTC and one of photos of babies doing different things as the previous poster requests. Others were recomendations for doctors and pediatricians... and warnings agianst other bad businesses that have screwed one of us over. (I forgot to tell you, we are called the Mommy Mofia for a reason. Don't mess with us!)

I had just posted yesterday about one member who just passed 10,000 posts. She had an average of nearly 34 posts per day. I was wondering if anyone could beat her. Nope. But now... but now she is at zero, just like me. I have a chance at the crown! I was at 3.73 ppd with 1921 when we crashed. I only know this because I had looked first thing that morning. Freaky timing.

Not the end of the world though. I'll just repost about the iPod help request and my questions about prenatal vitamins. I will update my avatar and signature. The other mommies still know me, I don't have to reintroduce myself.

And as all the site's down emails close....

    "Quick, go clean something"

    Maybe I will.

    Um.... Nah.

You know...I was just thinking about all of this, exactly what you said. I found myself thankful there were no household/family disasters occuring in my life, because my support system had been disabled. If one had, who would I turn to? *twitch twitch*

I am flattered that a fellow CM's first thought after the news of the crash was "How will I survive without Mo?" and went to all the trouble to get my e-mail address. (I was thinking the same thing about you, Jen)

As for the non-mommies...if you're in the Charlotte area and hear a mysterious whispering wind in the next few days, don't be alarmed. It is the collective sigh of relief, breathed forth from 2200 thankful souls.

We could be, we hope to be, we want to be....

    Preggers.

Yes, I know the above ticker is a bit presumptous but this month has been very odd for us. I keep pretty good tabs on my cycle, and I certainly did not ovulate at a normal time. This month, it was more like a week late... it looks like day 20. Call it a sign, an omen, good luck or fortune, and my personal fave... a gift from God; but that very lateness allowed John to return from a business trip in time. I think just from that our chances are really good. I have a feeling, a hunch, a gut instinct. 3rd month could be a charm.

So, if I am... the due date is around November the 3rd.
I promise, I'll let you know when we know for sure.
